The students need to hear it, see it, say it, and write it for phonics to go to reading. Teaching phonics needs to be purposeful and intentional, it is critical that the learner hear the phonics being taught alone and within context as the teacher reads and focuses on the skill being taught. The learner needs to see the phonics skill used within the content of stories and words. During phonics instruction, the learner needs to say the phonics skill as they read words, sentences, and stories. The learner also needs to write the phonics skill that is being taught. The learner needs time to practice the phonics skill by writing through dictation or self led sound to print.
